Death Of Links

Scroll this

Over the last couple of decades the traffic of the internet got largely concentrated (eg: facebook, amazon, twitter etc.)
And these sites started implementing a weird policy.
If you post external links in these sites, they get little to no reach.
All of the major social media now wants their user to post natively, not external links.
Yes, I understand that this makes sense from business perspective . If you can keep the user into your walled garden- you make more money, by showing them more advertisements.
But, this is very greedy and value extractive of these companies.
These companies and their sites grew on the back of open internet, where the flow of the packets of information were not restricted.
The internet that we know and use- was meant to be open and interoperable by design.
That was the vision of Tim Berners Lee, the creator of internet.
And one of the reasons these sites became popular to user is because user’s could share links of whatever else they found useful in the internet in these sites.
But, now these companies grew to a huge conglomerates- now they are trying to lock in the user. And they are trying to extract as much advertisement dollar as possible from the users.
This is clearly against the open and interoperable spirit of internet
